Saunas

In Chapter Two of Section 1, the author uses the Scandinavian experience of sitting in heated saunas as an example of a healing experience that can make the experience of "wintering" easier. She does not have a particularly good personal experience, but nevertheless offers a clear portrayal of the practice's potential values.

Children's Books

At several points in the book, the author references different children's books as a source of comfort in times of winter and "wintering," as insight into what both situations might mean, or as both. She pays particular attention to the Harry Potter series and to the Narnia series, as well as other individual titles.
