Moscow

Moscow, sometimes referred to as Rus to distinguish it from the world of the cheryti, is the main city of the novel. It contains the Grand Prince’s castle, Olga’s castle where Vasya and her family live, as well as the cathedral that Medved uses to spread the plague. At the beginning, Moscow is torn apart by fire that Vasya accidentally set when she defeated a sorcerer and free the horse (Pozhar) he enslaved. Konstantin himself uses a mob from Moscow to enact vengeance on Vasya, but ultimately fails. Unbeknownst to most people aside from Vasya and later Marya, many cheryti inhabit Moscow and many act as protectors or cleaners of the homes where they live in the fireplaces.
