Vasilisa (Vasya) Petrovna

Vasya is the main protagonist, sister to Sasha, cousin to Dmitrii, and Morozko’s lover. At the beginning of the novel, Vasya’s trusted companion and horse Solovey is killed by Konstantin who uses a mob to execute Vasya as a witch. However, she uses her magic to free herself from the flames and is sent into Midnight by Varvara. Over the course of the novel, Vasya comes to understand her heritage and relationship with the cheryti. At first, she believes her war is against the Bear. However, she realizes that she is not the one meant to differentiate between good and evil, but should be uniting with everyone. Vasya also struggles with madness as she embraces her magic. This is something that both Morozko and Sasha warn her against while Medved tries to convince her to give into it.
