Chapter XII Summary

As darkness falls, Rat arms the group of friends with the supplies he's laid aside. Badger takes the lead down the dark secret tunnel, with Mole coming second (due to his good work rabble-rousing the sentries), followed by Rat, and finally Toad, who has to be warned several times to keep quiet. After Toad causes yet another ruckus, the Badger wants to leave him behind, but Rat and Mole promise to be personally responsible for him. Rat then takes up the rear of the line to keep an eye on Toad. At last they reach the butler's pantry and make their way into Toad Hall. They can hear the intruders in the Banquet Hall singing rude songs about Toad. Badger lifts up his stick and summons his friends to follow him.

They sweep into the Banquet Hall and attack the unsuspecting, unarmed weasels and ferrets. Toad himself chases the Chief...
