Chapters 3 and 4 Summary

In Chapter Three, Jena writes a letter to her father, trying to sound upbeat. A shipment of merchandise arrives and Jena successfully completes the transaction though the men try to get more money from her. Jena and her sisters spend the day getting the merchandise stored. Jena says unpacking the goods is a treasure hunt. Paula finds books that capture her attention and Tati finds some wonderful fabric. Jena says they can make Tati a new gown for the dance, which is the next night. Tati is excited and the rest of the girls agree to pitch in to help with the sewing. That evening, they tell Florica they'll spend the next day sewing but don't reveal they're making a new dress. Florica tells Jena they need to hire someone to help mend a particular section of fencing.
