Summary

In Chapter 20, the girls move through the school, waking everyone. Taylor rushes to Headmistress's office and the other girls set to work making a blockade at the door. Hetty thinks about the relative security they enjoyed up to this point and blames herself for their current situation, including the bear and the Navy abandoning them. Headmistress returns, this time with her clothing neat and seeming ready to take charge. She instructs everyone to line up by grade, which takes a moment because the girls are out of practice. She announces they are having a safety drill and takes them all to the music room, which is now completely empty. Headmistress carefully counts the girls, then takes Taylor aside.
