While Gina is cleaning, Hjalmar comes in. In spite of her pleas that he stay, he searches the room for papers, notes, research, his diary, all the things he needs to write his memoirs and finish his invention so he can take them when he leaves. As he searches, he reveals to Gina that he plans to take Old Ekdal with him. He also refuses to eat anything while there. Hedwig comes in twice. The first time, she runs to him but he pushes her away. The second time, he refers to her as an intruder and tells her to leave.
