Munchkinland

Munchkinland is a rural collection of villages inhabited by small peasants and larger nobles. Elphaba is a Munchkinlander by birth. The land is ruled by leaders known as Eminences, each of whom controls a region of Munchkinland and in turn pays homage to the Eminent Thropp. Elphaba's mother's family rules the land from Colwen Grounds and directly runs the province of Nest Hardings. Nessarose herself rises to the position of ruler, but the Munchkinlanders do not seem prone to tyranny or malevolence. Even Nessarose's rulership is resented, however, and by the end of the novel Munchkinland's future is uncertain as they do away with the traditional ruling class.
