Chapter 34 Summary

Maya tells her mother she wants a job on the streetcars. Mother informs her the company only hires white people. At first, she feels disappointed. This feeling quickly changes to anger and she is offended. She decides to go to the office of the Market Street Railroad Company to find out why they won't hire her. The receptionist tells her they hire through agencies. Maya shows her the ad in the paper, telling applicants to speak to Mr. Cooper. The receptionist informs Maya that he isn't in the office today. She tells Maya to come back if she wants to, but he probably won't be in then either. Maya returns every day for three weeks. Her mother supports her and packs lunch for her daughter every morning.
