Maya's neighborhood changes during the war. The Japanese neighbors disappear from the neighborhood. Black people move in and go to work in the war plants. The black people don't think or speak about the Japanese. Because they aren't white, they aren't a threat, nor are they considered important. The neighborhood grows and contains two restaurants, two pool halls, four Chinese restaurants, two gambling houses, diners, shoeshine shops, and churches in one two block area. This is repeated in surrounding streets, containing similar businesses in similarly small areas.
Maya begins to feel part of the community in San Francisco. She feels at home with the fear of bombings. She thinks the city is friendly, but cool. She would like to possess these qualities as an adult. Compared with Stamps, it appears there is no racism.....
