Chapter 26 Summary
Maya worries about being reunited with her mother. The guilt she has felt since the rape returns. Mother moves Momma and Maya into an apartment. Maya remains here with her grandmother while Vivian goes to San Francisco to find a place for them to live. Bailey arrives and they stay in the apartment for six months, waiting for their mother. Their father visits once and brings fruit. Momma is making friends. When the kids move to San Francisco, Momma returns to Stamps.
Bailey and Maya move in with Mother and her family. Maya sleeps with her grandmother. Their mother wakes the kids during the night for parties with biscuits and chocolate milk. Vivian works at a bar called Mother Smith's running card games. Vivian teaches the children about other cultures through food: Chinese, Italian, Hungarian and Irish. Vivian is fair, but merciless.
