Chapter 24 Summary

As a result of eating too much candy, Maya has two cavities. Stamps has no black doctors or dentists. To see a dentist, they would have to travel twenty five miles to Texarkana. Momma makes the decision to take Maya to Dr. Lincoln, a white dentist in Stamps. During the depression, Momma loaned Dr. Lincoln money to keep his practice open. He only treats white patients, but Momma thinks he will make an exception for Maya. She makes Maya bathe, brush her teeth and use Listerine before they leave the house. Momma knocks on the back door of the office. Dr. Lincoln reminds Momma that he doesn't treat "Nigras." Momma reminds him of the help she gave him when he needed it. He responds that he would rather put his hands in a dog's mouth.
