Chapter 23 Summary

The graduates of Lafayette Training School are treated like royalty. The younger students in school are preparing to take their place at the head of the class. The graduating students have trouble concentrating in school and often show up without supplies. There are two buildings that make up the school, but it isn't well equipped. They have no equipment, lawns or tennis courts. These students are expected to become farmers, maids, handymen and carpenters. Very few of them will attend college. The graduation ceremony is exciting. White people come to make speeches. Maya has a new dress and is the center of attention. She has done well and is graduating second in her class. Her name will be the first one called during the ceremony.
