Chapter 22 Summary

Momma decides to close the store early due to a storm. Mr. George Taylor knocks on the back door. His wife has recently passed away, and he is looking for company. He stays for dinner. During the meal, Momma comments that it is a shame he and his wife never had any children. He tells Momma that his wife, Florida, said the same thing to him the night before. Maya remembers her funeral and that she didn't want to go. Momma insisted that she go because Mrs. Taylor had left Maya a piece of costume jewelry. Prior to this funeral, Maya thought words like death had no connection with her. The funeral makes death a reality and Maya worries about her own death. Her fear of death was exacerbated when the minister warned.....
