Chapter 17 Summary

For Maya most days feel the same, but Saturdays are different and exciting. It is the day the farmers come in with their children and Uncle Willie gives them the peanut patties that were broken in shipping. Momma gives the children each ten cents a week allowance. Maya gives her dime to Bailey to buy her comic books when he goes into town to see a movie. One evening, Bailey is late coming home. Uncle Willie tells Momma that he is coming and Momma and Maya walk down to meet him. He doesn't speak or offer any explanation for his lateness. He tells Maya to leave him alone, which causes her to feel confused and afraid.
