Chapter 16 Summary

Maya goes to work for a woman named Mrs. Cullinan when she is ten years old. She is from a wealthy Virginia family and is an extremely demanding employer. She has married beneath her class and is unable to have children of her own. She is an alcoholic and drinks alcohol frequently from unmarked bottles. The Coleman children belong to her husband and a black mistress. Mrs. Cullinan tells a friend that Marguerite's name is Margaret, to which her friend replies that the name is too long and she should be called Mary.
