Chapter 15 Summary

About one year passes before Maya meets Mrs. Bertha Flowers. She is the nobility in Stamps. Mrs. Flowers is one of the few gentle women Maya has met in her life and Maya thinks she is the ideal human being. Maya becomes embarrassed hearing Momma's poor grammar when she overhears a conversation between Momma and Mrs. Flowers. She doesn't understand that they have had many of the same experiences in life. Mrs. Flowers' manners and beauty made Maya feel proud to be black for the first time. Mrs. Flowers shops at the store and Momma offers to send Bailey along with her purchases. She says she would rather have Marguerite. Maya puts on a school dress and accompanies Mrs. Flowers.

On the walk she tells Maya that language is how man communicates and it.....
