Chapter 12 Summary
Mr. Freedman orders eight year old Maya to take off her panties. She refuses and he rapes her. She passes out and wakes up in the bathtub where Freedman is washing her and apologizing for what he has done. He repeats his threats to kill Bailey if she tells. She feels sick and asks to go lie down. He refuses and demands that she keep her plans to go to the library. She can barely walk and can't sit on the hard chairs, so she goes home and hides her panties. Mother thinks she is sick with a fever or the measles. Bailey reads to her while Mother and Mr. Freedman fight in the next room. Mr. Freedman moves out that night. The next day, Mother is changing the sheets on the bed when Marguerite's panties fall at her feet.
