Maya feels she is in a foreign country in St. Louis and has difficulty adjusting to flushing toilets, cars and buses, doorbells and the general noise of city life. Mother is a nurse by profession, but never works in her field during the years the children are with her. She earns her extra money cutting poker games. Mr. Freedman comes home in the evenings when Mother is out and eats his dinner without speaking to the children. During this time, Maya begins having nightmares and crawls into bed with her mother and Mr. Freedman. One morning after her mother had left the house, Freedman molests her in the bed. He then pours water on the sheets and tells Maya she has wet the bed. He threatens to kill Bailey if she tells anyone.....
