Chapter 4 Summary

According to Angelou, childhood's unanswered questions can only be answered in the town in which the child grew up. Values and dislikes are formed in the town where a child is raised. Mr. McElroy is an independent black manand the only black man other than the school principal to wear suits. Bailey is the greatest person in the world to Maya. He loves her and takes revenge when others insult her. Maya admires how he is able to finish all his chores and homework and still is able to read more than she and play group games outside. He is an expert at stealing pickles from the barrel in the store.

Maya loves going to town, but feels like an explorer without a weapon in the white section of Stamps. Segregation is so complete.....
