Mr. McElroy is an independent black manand the only black man other than the school principal to wear suits. Bailey is the greatest person in the world to Maya. He loves her and takes revenge when others insult her. Maya admires how he is able to finish all his chores and homework and still is able to read more than she and play group games outside. He is an expert at stealing pickles from the barrel in the store.
