Summary

In "What She Can Do," an unnamed woman blames herself for her divorce. Now as a single working mother, she realizes she had not been considering her child's needs when she left her husband. She works every night, leaving her daughter alone, praying she will be okay. Sometimes she wonders if she deserves "to be called a mother" (151). She feels caught in a life she chose.

Noticing the mother’s distress, an unnamed ghost "decides to step in and help" (152). She makes a report and gives it to Mr. Tei for approval. Every night she stays with the little girl while her mother works, bringing her sweets and protecting her. The ghost especially likes the mother and child's home. No one has the right to judge the mother for her efforts. The mother does not notice the ghost...
