Chapter 21 Summary
Willy Jack gets off the bus at the station. He has Finny's suitcase, the Martin, and Claire's money and hails a cab. At a hotel, he practices songs for auditions including "The Beat of a Heart", the song he wrote in prison. He had watched videotapes from Claire of country singers, and he had listened to the Walkman she got him. In front of the mirror in Claire's office, he had practiced his moves. After a year in prison, he knew how to perform on stage. He is ready to move up in Nashville. After not getting into the big agencies, Willy Jack walks into the Boston Building. The ad in the paper promising auditions for club gigs is not much, but Willy Jack is desperate.
He goes to the Ruth Meyers Agency. Willy Jack goes inside without knocking. A woman says, in a disgusted voice, that he is another...
