Chapter 12 Summary
Willy Jack stays in the county jail for nine days, and then he has a short trial and sentencing. His sentence is fourteen months in a New Mexico jail. Willy Jack shares his cell with Turtle, an old Navajo. One night, Willy Jack's heart stops. The pain pins Willy Jack down. Turtle says the heart is not beating. Willy Jack will forget the singing in Navajo and Turtle tapping his chest. However, in the future, and when he does not want to think about it, he will recall Novalee's voice talking about where the heart is. He feels his heart beat once then the beats try to follow Turtle's tapping on his chest. The prison librarian, Claire Hudson, is obsessed with Band-Aids. She wears them all over her body. Claire has always covered her hurts but exposes a wound to Willy Jack. She is putting a Band-Aid on a paper...
