Chapter 11 Summary
Sam Walton is correct because the attention paid to Novalee diminishes after a month. A couple from Mississippi goes to Sister's wanting to tell Novalee about God, but Sister says she already knows and gives them a copy of Ecclesiastes before getting them to leave. Novalee is too busy getting to know Americus to notice. Sister is very helpful as she tends to the baby. At first, Novalee is very polite, and she says "please" and "thank you". It changes when Novalee has an accident with the gas stove. While going through the house in the dark at two in the morning, she hits her shin on the stove. Novalee's cries wakes up Sister. Novalee's skin is open to the bone. Sister puts antiseptic on Novalee's leg. Novalee curses. Embarrassed, she looks at Sister. Sister says she did not say "please" and breaks into laughter. Blushing, Novalee has a confused...
