Chapter 4 Summary

Novalee sets three alarms to wake her up so a worker will not find her sleeping. She goes to the bathroom and puts on a pants suit she got from the maternity rack. She either wears that or the tent dress she came there in. She has to hide when the employees arrive. After everyone is there, she goes to the tool locker, gets her buckeye tree, and goes outside. The tree is dying. The trunk is dry, and it has not grown since she got it four weeks ago. Novalee is afraid because she does not know what kind of luck she will have if the tree dies. She has to go to the library to get a book on buckeyes so she can know what to do for it.

Chapter 4 Analysis

Novalee tending to the tree is symbolic of her trying to bring good luck to her life.
