Novalee Nation, who is pregnant, is left at Wal-Mart by her boyfriend, Willy Jack Pickens. Having never had a real family or home, Novalee and her daughter find their own family and home while Willy Jack suffers for his misdeeds.

Seventeen-year-old Novalee Nation is seven months pregnant and going in a car from Tennessee to California with her boyfriend Willy Jack Pickens. Her unlucky number is seven. She puts his hand on her stomach and asks if he can feel the baby's heartbeat. He says no. While she goes inside Wal-Mart to go to the bathroom and buy shoes, Willy Jack drives away and leaves her. She is stranded in Wal-Mart with nowhere to go. She meets Sister Husband, Moses Whitecotton, and ten-year-old Benny Goodluck who gives her a buckeye tree.
