Summary

Chapter 39 takes place in August of 1969. Chase visits Kya in the marsh. He says that he wants to resume his relationship with her. When Kya refuses, Chase hits Kya and tries to rape her. Kya hits him in the testicles and runs away. She notices two men in a boat who witnessed the struggle. Chapter 40 takes place in 1970. The prosecutor calls to the stand Rodney Horn, one of the two men who witnessed the struggle. Rodney says what he saw. When the defense attorney cross-examines, he has Rodney reiterate the fact that Chase was trying to rape Kya and that Kya was defending herself. Chapter 41 takes place in August, 1969.
