Summary

Chapter 7 takes place in 1952. Kya, in the shack, thinks about Tate and about her increasing solitude. Pa eventually returns, and Kya makes a meal for him. The next morning, Pa and Kya in go in Pa’s boat to go fishing. They go fishing almost every day, and Kya hopes to encounter Tate again. One day, Pa says that his family used to be wealthy and live in Asheville. Chapter 8 takes place in 1969. Sheriff Jackson informs Chase’s parents and Chase’s wife Pearl of Chase’s death. One day, Jackson overhears two locals gossiping and saying that Chase could have been killed by “that woman lives out in the marsh” (62), but Jackson pays the gossip no mind.
