Part 1, Natal: Chapters 22-24 Summary

The next day, Garrick and Anna go to the Cathedral in Pietermaritzburg. The marriage is a loveless affair on Anna's part, and leaving the Cathedral, Garry can hardly believe it. They go to the hotel without touching, Garry signs the register, and the clerk puts them in the honeymoon suite. They have dinner and Anna goes up to the room while Garry lingers over coffee in the lounge. When he musters the courage to go up he finds Anna in bed, and takes his nightshirt going into the bathroom to wash and change. Coming out he sits and removes his peg leg, hops to the bed and and when he gets in, Anna jerks as far away as she can, begging him not to touch her. Filled with revulsion, she asks Garry to sleep in the drawing room and he agrees...
