Summary

Theo rushes to Sydney’s rescue, armed with a ceramic knife. Sydney points her gun at Theo, who realizes his knife matches the sinister threats Sydney found on the iPad. Sydney asks if Theo knew Drea “died like a rat in the wall” (291). The intruder appears and shoots at Sydney but misses. Theo and Sydney kill the intruder.

Theo takes the intruder’s phone and finds texts from Kim demanding to know whether Sydney and Theo have been killed. Theo mimics the intruder’s habit of using violent emojis to “confirm” the kills. The intruder’s phone also contains the OurHood Rejuvenation group, which includes Kim, her father, Josie, and Terry. The group discusses a meeting taking place that night. Ms. Candace calls for Sydney at the front door. When Theo and Sydney step outside, the street plunges into a blackout.
