Summary

Chapter 12 is titled “A First Confession.” Thomas and Anne work on the book for Eoin and Anne compliments Thomas's artistry. Anne thinks back to the church service. Brigid had pinched Eoin's leg to make him be still and was embarrassed by Anne's look of reproach. Anne knows Brigid is “suffering” with the current situation. Thomas had been surprised when the priest announced that Irish and British governments had announced a peace treaty to be signed on July 11, just as Anne had predicted. When Thomas joins Anne later, he immediately says he knows she is not “Declan's Anne” (165), but then qualifies it by adding the word “anymore.” He acknowledges the attraction between them. Thomas talks about how much Anne has changed. She puts it down to the situation, saying everyone is different. They kiss and Anne later realizes he had not mentioned her prediction...
