Chapter 12 Summary

Abby calls her mother late on Saturday night, and her mother tells her—to her surprise—that she has called Reuben and that he raved about her "inner poise" (p. 159). Abby's mother says that she things she has been too hard on Abby. "I worried that you were too caught up in James," she says, "but I see now that if you were interested in dating other boys, and turned James away, then you aren't caught up at all. You're just a young woman tackling all of the choices that come along with being on your own for the first time." (p. 160).

Abby's mother says that her trust comes on one condition: that Abby never lies to her—and that she gets straight As. Abby agrees—she got two As and two Bs with only three days' studying&mdash...
