Nigerian Delta

The first five chapters on the novel take place in and around Bayelsa in the Nigerian Delta. This is where Chike and Yęmi's unit of the Nigerian Army is stationed, from which they flee after Colonel Benatari orders them to set fire to a village. The army base is described as a series of small, squat buildings and tents surrounded by barbed wire. Chike can hear an oil company drilling in the distance. While walking through the Delta en route to Yenagoa, Chike and Yęmi encounter Fineboy and Isoken.

Yenagoa

Chike, Yęmi, Fineboy and Isoken arrive in Yenagoa in Chapter 6. They attempt to bring Isoken to her uncle's house, but find that this is not a safe environment for her, and the group leaves Yenagoa on a bus to Lagos, at which point Chike meets Oma.
