Summary

In Chapter 5, Lizzie reads a book about a man who cannot stop dreaming about being chased by a demon. When he tells his therapist about the dreams, the therapist tells him he needs to confront his demons head on.

Now that Will has left for the last time, Lizzie looks at the book he gave her. She sees that he has signed it for her. Scribbled inside is an acronym, MYBAS, which Lizzie identifies as meaning, “May You Be Among the Survivors” (203). Not only is this a joke between Will and Lizzie, since Lizzie often talked to Will about the end of the world and her preparations for it, but the acronym also assures that Ben will not understand the message. Thus, Lizzie’s relationship with Will can remain a secret.
