Summary

In Chapter 14, Halina and her cousin Franka are crossing the Bug River en route from Radom to Lvov. She has left behind her parents and Mila and Felicia, who are living together in the ghetto. Adam has told her that Genek has disappeared. Halina and Franka see flashlights and hear voices and become frightened. They are discovered by some Soviet soldiers who take the women to their camp. Franka flirts with one of the soldiers, and Halina takes comfort in the fact that she will soon be with Adam.

Part II begins with Chapter 15. Addy is aboard a ship called the Alsina, traveling over the Mediterranean to Brazil, having secured the travel visa from Souza Dantas. Many of the other passengers aboard the ship are also Jews fleeing Europe. Addy finds a music lounge on the ship, complete with a piano, and begins...
