Harry Potter Book

In “Anything Helps,” the Harry Potter book symbolizes hope and resolve. Wayne feels deep sadness for the ways in which his addictions have affected his life. However, he manages to stay sober long and save money for long enough to buy a book for his son. When Nate refuses the gift, Wayne decides to keep the book as a reminder to stay strong and sober for his son.

In “We Live in Water,” water symbolizes the struggle to control one’s own life. After seeing a fish tank, young Michael asks his father the cryptic question, “Do we live in water?” (18). Oren eventually responds, “We ain’t like fish…You can do whatever you want” (39). In the story, both Oren and Michael struggle to gain a stable life and a firm sense of self.
