Summary

The conclusion is a close-reading and analysis of Beyonce's film and visual album Lemonade. It begins with a refusal, she denies the audience her gaze as her lover has denied her his. Seeing each other fully and mutually, Chang argues, is the beginning of community. Lemonade is a story of infidelity and broken promises that takes one Black woman from grief to redemption. Beyonce moves from denial to anger to apathy. Images of a house in flames harken to riots which are contrasted with images of support and healing. The narrative moves into self-interrogation which also represents the collective story of Black womanhood.

The climax of the film emphasizes love and reconciliation. Beyonce reunites with her lover and Chang writes about how a different approach to revolution that would require us to move away from divisiveness and toward "honoring and transforming ourselves...
