Simon's Wings and Tail

Simon's wings and tail are symbols of how he sees himself now after having lost his magic and having completed a quest to eliminate a dangerous being in his world. His friend Penny has the ability to conceal his wings, but Simon chooses to simply cover them with a coat. The coat makes it difficult for him to move around among people. As the novel comes to an end, Simon notes that a magickal doctor can remove the wings and the tail, which will allow him to go forward with his life. However, he has not yet had them removed.

The Mustang is a symbol of iconic America as Simon has seen it in movies, and he is thrilled when he learns that Penny has rented an older Mustang for them to use while traveling across America.
