Summary

In Chapter 5, “Warrior Kid,” Marc wakes the next morning to find that Jake has already exercised, showered, done some reading for college, and is having breakfast with Marc's mother. Jake says he got up at “zero-dark-thirty” (28). Jake and Marc go for a walk and talk about the meaning of the word “warrior.” Jake says it really has nothing to do with fighting in battles. By his definition, a warrior is someone who “stand up for themselves … face challenges … have discipline … and constantly try to test and improve themselves” (29). Marc still does not understand how a kid can do those things. Jake says a Warrior Kid would not cry about his situation as Marc did, but would take the steps to overcome them.
