Berg has come to ask his father-in-law a favor. With the mass exodus out of Moscow, furniture and valuables are being sold cheaply. He wants to buy some furniture but doesn't have room in his cart for it. He wants the Rostovs to move it for him. The count and Natasha want to give all their carts up to move the wounded. Berg and the countess are bewildered and alarmed by this. Natasha begs and the countess gives in. With great zeal, she helps to get the carts unloaded, leaving all the Rostovs' possessions behind in order to move as many wounded men as possible. Sonya finds out the Prince Bolkonsky is in one of the Rostovs' carts and tells the countess that he is dying. The countess and Sonya decide.....
