Maria is not in Moscow as Prince Andrew supposes. Old Bolkonsky refuses to leave and rallies his energies to assemble the militia. Maria defies her father by refusing to leave him, bringing a fury of his wrath upon her. She goes to Bogutcharovo with her father and nephew, but it isn't safe there, so Maria makes preparations to move them all to Moscow. While in Bogutcharovo, Old Bolkonsky dies. Before he dies he thanks her, calls her "dear one," and asks her to forgive him. He has never spoken tenderly to her before. After his death, she berates herself for sometimes longing for his death. Because Andrew had somewhat liberated the serfs at Bogutcharovo, they have quite a different character from the serfs at Bald Hills. One in particular, Dron, doesn't.....
