It is 1805, and Anna Pavlovna has invited Petersberg's elite to another one of her drawing room soiryes. Prince Vasili Kuragin is first to arrive. He is suave, sophisticated, and cynical, a father of three grown, but unmarried, children. Anna and Prince Vasili discuss politics, Napoleon and Alexander, and Vasili's three children. Anna Pavlovna decides to help Vasili arrange a marriage for his son, Anatole, to a wealthy heiress, Princess Bolkonsky, whose brother will be arriving later in the evening. (read more)
