Chapters 77 through 81 Summary

Pug writes a long letter to Pamela. He tells her he and Rhoda have talked and he asked what would make her happy. She says she wants a divorce and Pug agrees. He then asks Pam to marry him, if she has not already married Duncan. He says that if it is too late, he hopes she will take the letter as a "farewell compliment" to their love. Pam gets the letter some six weeks later after Duncan has gone to fight and while there is still a search for him underway. She does not reply until Duncan is found but he is terribly ill and she spends hours each day at his bedside.
