Growing Pains and Maturity
Creech's Walk Two Moons is about Salamanca Hiddle, a thirteen-year-old girl who experiences many things in the course of two years. Everything starts when her mother suffers a miscarriage and loses her ability to have children. After then, her mother changes drastically from her former lively self. Sal blames herself, thinking that her mother's miscarriage was brought on when she carried Sal home when she broke her leg. When her mother goes away to find herself, Sal doesn't understand why she left and why her father didn't stop her.
Sal has a chance to think about her interactions with her parents through Phoebe Winterbottom, her friend in Euclid, Ohio. Her observation of Phoebe's casual indifference to her mother makes her realize how she may have hurt her mother through her thoughtless words and occasional indifference.
