Chapter 42 Summary

When the man drives off, Sal crawls beneath the railing and makes her way down the hill toward the bus. She climbs up onto the bus's side, hoping to make her way down to an open window, but that's impossible. She wanted to scour every inch of the bus, looking for something that might be familiar.

When she climbs back up, she sees the sheriff's car parked behind Gramps's red Chevrolet. At first, the sheriff admonishes her, thinking that she's one of the kids out to play on the bus. Then when he finds out that she drove all the way from Coeur d'Alene, he gives her a stern look and asks for an explanation. When she tells him the rest, he returns to his car and talks into his radio some more.
