Chapter 40 Summary
At that point of Sal's story, they cross the Montana border into Idaho. Gramps suggests spending the night in Coeur d'Alene. They can make it to Lewiston from there, an easy morning's journey. Gramps is concerned about Gram's health. Sal even suggests stopping for a while to rest. Gram insists on heading straight to Coeur d'Alene. She coughs a long, hacking cough. Gram asks what happened afterwards.
The latest message is the one they've already received. Don't judge a man until you've walked two moons in his moccasins. Mrs. Partridge confirms that she's been leaving the messages when Phoebe asks. She looks like a mischievous child. Margaret reads them to her from the paper each day, and when there's a nice one, she asks her to copy it down. She thought the messages would be grand surprises for them, like fortune cookies.
Phoebe looks at Sal for a long minute...
