Chapter 37 Summary

Phoebe is stunned and angry, but she's braver than Sal in this case. Sal just cannot watch it anymore. Down the street she goes, trying to remember the location of the bus stop. When she sees the hospital, she realizes that she must have missed the bus stop. Sal is surprised to see that Phoebe didn't' follow her.

On an impulse, a hunch, she asks the hospital receptionist for Mrs. Finney. She is in the psychiatric ward. Only family members can see her. When Sal tells her that she's looking for her son, the woman suggests checking the backyard.

Behind the hospital is a wide, sloping lawn, bordered by flower gardens. It is much like the one at the university. Ben is sitting cross-legged on the ground in front of a woman in a pink.....
