Chapter 30 Summary

Gram comments that Sal must like Phoebe, and it's true. Sal is drawn to Phoebe. She is sure that underneath all that odd behavior is someone frightened. Also, Phoebe feels like another version of Sal, because she acts out the way Sal sometimes feels.

One night, Phoebe and Sal break into Mrs. Cadaver's house. Phoebe is about to go to sleep when she sees Mrs. Cadaver leave in her nurse's uniform. She waits until her father is asleep and phones Sal to come over. Sal is reluctant, but Phoebe says she just wants a quick look. The door is unlocked and Sal follows her in. They go into the room to the right and nearly leap through the window when someone calls out to Sal. It's Mrs. Partridge. She recognizes Sal by her particular sound and smell.
