Chapter 19 Summary

As Phoebe wants her to do, one Sunday, Sal brings up the subject of Margaret Cadaver to her father. She asks him whether he knows much about her. He thinks she's finally ready to talk about how he and Mrs. Cadaver met. She doesn't want him to explain. She wants to warn him about her. She starts with how Margaret slashes and hacks away at the bushes in her backyard to how her voice is like dead leaves and her hair spooky. Her father comments that it seems she's been spying on Mrs. Cadaver. Sal suggests that they shouldn't go over to her house anymore.

Her father takes off his glasses and rubs them on his shirt for about five minutes. Finally, he tells her that she's trying to catch fish in the air......
