Chapter 16 Summary

Gram is released from the hospital the next morning, mainly because she's so ornery. Gramps wants her to stay another day but gives in. Sal spent the night in the waiting room. She feared that she might never see Gram again if she left the hospital.

The boy spends the night curled up in an armchair, and Sal suspects that he hasn't slept, either. He makes a phone call once, saying that he's with some friends and he'll be home in the morning. He gives her his address in case she wants to write to him. He'll understand if she doesn't. This is when Sal asks for his name and learns it's Tom Fleet.

Sal wants to call her father, but Gramps suggests waiting until they get to Idaho. He doesn't want to worry him......
